Our Story

Penny Acre Farm was founded by Rita and Mike Godfrey in 2019 on their two-acre farm in Ridgeland, South Carolina. Filled with greenhouses, hoop houses, and workshops for art and woodworking, their property is also filled with gorgeous flowers and gardens, fruit trees, grapevines, and seasonal vegetables.

After discovering that microgreens are hard to find at traditional grocery stores, the Godfreys saw a need in the local marketplace and dove in headfirst. Rita took a growing course online and learned quickly through trial and error after starting with four simple varieties. They now offer hydroponic-grown vegetables and 20+ varieties of microgreens, selling both to local restaurants and shoppers at weekly farmer markets.

You can find Penny Acre’s produce at the Hilton Head Island Farmers’ Market on Tuesdays and the Port Royal Farmers’ Market on Saturdays. And while you’re chatting, be sure to ask about local delivery, neighborhood subscriptions, and other pop-up markets in the area!

The new owners, locals Gabe and Melissa Padron, are stewarding the microgreens and hydroponic veggies you love into your favorite Ridgeland farm’s next chapter, so be sure to give them a very warm welcome!
